In recent years, the beauty market has seen significant shifts in consumer trends. The increasing prominence of keywords such as “clean beauty,” “green beauty,” “sustainable beauty,” “vegan,” “cruelty-free,” and “zero-waste beauty” reflects the growing demand for natural cosmetics. This trend not only opens doors for natural beauty brands to tap into a promising customer base, but also presents challenges for businesses in brand building and improving competitiveness.

The zero-waste movement has gained popularity in recent years as a lifestyle choice, particularly among Gen Z—who believe that sustainable living, environmental responsibility, and eco-friendly product life cycles enhance quality of life. In the beauty industry, this trend is evident in practices such as packaging refills, water-saving production processes, minimizing single-use plastics, and using minimalist yet effective packaging.
Major brands like L’Oréal and Unilever have launched green production campaigns, incorporating recycling technologies and refining processes to minimize waste throughout the product lifecycle. One example is Unilever’s “Love Beauty and Planet” campaign, which emphasizes environmental protection through “fast rinse technology” that saves water and eliminates parabens, as well as reusable packaging and community-support initiatives. L’Oréal’s “Reducing Virgin Plastic Packaging” campaign aims to eliminate virgin plastics in packaging, targeting 100% recyclable, reusable, or biodegradable plastic packaging by 2030.
Alongside this, organic beauty is thriving—focusing on certified organic ingredients that are free of synthetic chemicals, parabens, and mineral oil derivatives. Unlike natural beauty, organic cosmetics must meet strict standards in farming, processing, and certification such as USDA Organic or Ecocert. This means not all natural ingredients qualify as organic unless no artificial additives are used in the production process.
Although stemming from different concepts—“zero waste” centers on minimizing environmental impact, while “organic beauty” ensures ingredient safety and purity—both represent a common shift: consumers increasingly prioritize sustainability, product transparency, and brand responsibility. Vietnamese beauty brands must not only focus on product quality, but also develop sustainable supply chains to meet consumer expectations around ingredients and packaging, thereby gaining competitive advantages.

Surveys on consumer demand in Vietnam show that products labeled as “green” are widely trusted and chosen. According to Nielsen (2024), 60% of customers responded positively when asked about green products, and 55% based their purchasing decisions on factors like sustainable production, natural ingredients, and environmental friendliness. Data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade (2023) shows that 72% of Vietnamese consumers are willing to pay more for eco-friendly products, reflecting a clear rise in demand within this segment.
To keep up with sustainable development trends, many beauty brands are expanding their vegan product lines. Some have even embedded green messaging into their core values to raise environmental awareness. For example, Vietnam-based brand Cocoon has made its mark with vegan product lines using familiar natural ingredients such as Đắk Lắk coffee in exfoliators, winter melon in moisturizers, and Northwestern rose in toners. Leveraging local ingredients not only makes products skin-friendly but also contributes to sustainable agricultural development.

Despite their rising popularity, organic beauty products face several challenges. Higher production costs due to natural ingredients, stringent production processes, and international certification requirements pose significant barriers, making it difficult for many brands to optimize pricing. In addition, competing with conventional beauty lines—often more affordable and with loyal customer bases—remains a major hurdle. In Vietnam, the limited access to qualified manufacturing partners and the lack of familiarity with international certification guidelines also make the transition harder. In this context, trade exhibitions like Vietbeauty & Cosmobeauté Vietnam 2025 play a vital role, helping businesses connect with trusted suppliers and optimize their strategies for sustainable growth.
